BETHANY — Margaret “Peggy” Withey Loos of Bethany passed away on April 19, 2015 after a short illness.

Born in Hartford on March 24, 1929 to the late Margaret and Francis Withey, Peggy was the cherished wife of William Loos for 56 years, and revered mother and mother-in-law to Cecelia Dorsey of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Christina Sachin of Rocky Hill, Margaret Loos-Cosgrove of Milford, William and Carol Turney-Loos of Tacoma, Wash., Edward Loos and Deborah Bessen of Montclair, N.J., and Mary Loos and Robert Petry of Richmond, Va. Peggy took joy in her grandchildren, Caitlin, Robyn, Matthew, Brian, Alexis, Westin, Liam, Bennett, Dexter, Shay, and Skylar. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Francis, Maurice, and Bill, and by her beloved sister, Katherine.

Peggy grew up in Watertown, where she attended local schools and Waterbury Catholic High School, and graduated from the University of Connecticut, where she met her husband, Bill, a noted baseball athlete who later played for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. A lifetime naturalist and autodidact, she returned to formal education after raising her family to proudly attain a master’s degree in environmental science from Southern Connecticut State University.

Peggy shared her unique vigor, her sustaining love of nature, and her strong sense of civic and social obligation with everyone she touched through her home life, her country gardening, her commitments as Bethany Registrar of Voters and Cub Scout den mother, and her many years teaching sciences at the Polly McCabe Center for pregnant teens in the New Haven Public Schools. She was and is a fervent supporter of the UConn mens and womens basketball teams.

A memorial mass for Peggy will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 1700 Litchfield Turnpike, Woodbridge, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury on Monday, May 11 at 1 p.m. Miller-Ward Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
