NAUGATUCK — Burgess Alex Olbrys is hoping to take a step forward in his political career.

Olbrys, a Republican, plans to announce he will be seeking the nomination from the Republican Town Committee to run for mayor. Olbrys will make his announcement at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Corner Tavern, 178 North Main St.

Olbrys said he chose April 8 to make his announcement because it will be his 23rd birthday.

Olbrys, who currently works as a customer service manager at Wal-Mart in Naugatuck, has a bachelor’s degree in history from Southern Connecticut State University. He is currently in his first term on the Board of Mayor and Burgesses and previously served on the Inland Wetlands Commission.

Olbrys said he is confident his platform will receive the nomination from the Republican Town Committee.

“My ideas are what the town needs,” Olbrys said.

The mayoral field is wide open heading into the November election as Mayor Robert Mezzo, a Democrat, announced he will not be seeking another term. No other candidates have officially announced their intention to run for mayor.
