NAUGATUCK — Two families were displaced in a blaze at an apartment complex on Barn Finch Circle on Wednesday evening.

The fire started on the back porch of 28 Barn Finch Circle around 7:10 p.m. and spread up the back of the building, onto the second floor of units 28 and 30 and into the attic, according to Second Assistant Fire Chief Paul Russell.

Mutual aid from Beacon Falls and Waterbury helped extinguish the fire by 8 p.m.

Jose Cerra, whose condominium at 26 Barn Finch Circle sustained smoke damage, said he was alerted to the fire when his neighbor knocked on his door looking for a fire extinguisher.

Cerra tried to grab his cat before leaving his home, but the feline escaped his arms. A second cat was missing from unit 28.

“I’m just glad nobody was hurt,” said Margaret Miron, who lives at unit 24 in the same strip.

A message left with the fire marshal’s office on Thursday seeking further information wasn’t returned as of this post.
