NAUGATUCK — A blighted building at the corner of South Main and Maple streets is coming down.

The Public Works Department announced the demolition of the building at 1 South Main St. will begin Friday morning and continue through Saturday. Workers began preparing for the full demolition Thursday and tore one side of the building off.

South Main and Maple streets are expected to be open to two-way traffic during the demolition. However, the department is expecting delays and asked people to seek alternative routes if possible.

The borough has planned to tear down the building for over two years. Weise Construction of Norwich was awarded the contract for $42,900 to demolish the building.

Officials have asked that any pedestrians and onlookers keep a safe distance while work is occurring on the building.
