Library to close for repairs

PROSPECT — The Prospect Library will close Monday for up to two weeks in order to replace the boiler.

At Tuesday’s Town Council meeting Mayor Robert Chatfield said the boiler had been having problems for a while. He said it broke Tuesday after pressure built up and blew a hole in the side of the boiler.

At the meeting officials said the library was closed until further notice. However, the library on Wednesday posted a message on its website that said a temporary patch on the boiler will allow the library to stay open through Saturday.

The library will be closed for seven to 14 days as the boiler is replaced. It is expected to cost in excess of $10,000 to replace the boiler, Chatfield said.

Chatfield said the library staff had been looking for parts to fix the boiler, which was installed in 1990 when the library first opened. However, he said, due to the age of the boiler, they were unable to locate the parts needed to repair it before it broke.

“It’s not unusual for a boiler to go when it gets aged,” Chatfield said.

Chatfield said the town will use a propane burner at the library to heat the building and prevent any pipes from bursting while the boiler is being replaced. He said the heater uses a flame. If residents see a flame at the library, he said, there is no need to call the fire department.
