NAUGATUCK — Mr. John G. Maroney, 90, a lifelong resident of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Doris (Lafontaine) Maroney.

John was born in Naugatuck on Sept. 1, 1924, the son of the late John C. and Mary (Suba) Maroney. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

He proudly served our country as a member of the Merchant Marine during World War II, serving in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Middle East war zones.

John was a member of Teamsters Local 677 and was employed as a tractor-trailer driver by Brookside Dairy and New Penn Motor Express. John was a member of the American Truck Historical Society-Nutmeg Chapter. After retirement, John and Doris traveled and spent many winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He will be missed by his children Linda (Flint) of Bethel, Sharon (David) of Blue Grass, Iowa, Gale of Candler, N.C., Jim (Hye Chong) of Poulsbo, Wash., Patti (Rob) of Marlborough, Judy Dingle (Fran) of Naugatuck, and Kerri Hayden (Kevin) of Naugatuck; and his grandchildren, Jesse Maroney, Joyce and Shannon Maroney, Kyle and Sean Gnocchi, Amanda and Jake Dingle and Kate and Kelly Hayden. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all those who cared for John, especially Lisa Chandler, for their kindness and compassion.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck. There are no calling hours. The Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect is in charge of arrangements.
