PROSPECT — Mr. Leonard J. March, 91, of Prospect, formerly of Naugatuck, passed away Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 in the VITAS Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley (Montambault) March.

Mr. March was born in Naugatuck on June 10, 1923, a son of the late Sylvester and Lillian (Wolowski) Marchlewski. He was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy and longtime proprietor of March’s Pharmacies in both Oakville and Naugatuck. He later worked at St. Mary’s Hospital Pharmacy and East Mountain Pharmacy until his retirement and was a member of the Prospect Congregational Church.

During World War II, Mr. March served his country with honor in the United States Army, 8th Armored Division-78th Combat Medical Battalion, where he received the Combat Medic Badge and the Bronze Star, his unit earning the distinction of “Liberators” for their rescue of German concentration camp survivors in 1945. Mr. March enjoyed music, history, traveling to favorite spots in New England, landscaping, a good meal (two desserts, please) and his favorite pastime — organizing. He will be remembered for his warm, friendly charm, his great generosity, his intellect, his thoughtful advice, his love of learning and his passion for doing things “the right way.”

Mr. March is survived by two daughters,: Micaela “Mimi” Zwick and her husband, Gerald, of Thomaston, Maine, and Lynn (Southard) Hunt of Madison; four sons, Jonathan Miles March of South Glastonbury, Noel Culver March and his wife, Laurie, of Hampden, Maine, Mark Southard and his wife, Karen, of Prospect and Craig Southard and his wife, Geri, of Ansonia; a brother, Alfred Marchlewski and his wife, Delores, of Naugatuck; a sister-in-law, Stella March of Naugatuck, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nona Adele (Culver) March and his older brother, Edwin March.

Private funeral services and burial with full military honors will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect is in charge of arrangements.
