PROSPECT — Mr. Leonard R. “Duke” Carriero, 77, of Prospect passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was married for 51 years to his beloved wife, Charlene (Buteau) Carriero.

Mr. Carriero was born on July 11, 1937 in Waterbury, son of the late Dominic and Rose (Lacondrata) Carriero. Duke previously was a member of the Army National Guard and attended UConn. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Prospect. He was retired from Pilot Pen where he had worked as a programmer analyst. He previously worked at Scovill Mfg. He was an avid UConn basketball, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Eagles fan. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and taking trips to the casinos with his wife. He cherished the time that he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Carriero is survived by three daughters, Chris Sparso and her husband, Greg, of Wolcott, Ronnie Grosso and her husband, Tom, of Thomaston and Joanne Jorge and her husband, Nelson, of Southbury and his son, Jeffrey Carriero of Nashville, Tenn. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Carriero and his brother, Jim Carriero both of Waterbury; grandchildren, Michael DeLuco, Nicholas DeLuco, Michael Sparso, Anthony DeLuco, Jake Grosso, Samy Jorge and her fiancé, Kyle Zorn, Jason Jorge and Austin Jorge, several nieces, nephews, an aunt, an uncle and many cousins.

Mr. Carriero’s family would like to thank the Waterbury VNA HOPE Team, the staff at the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center and the staff at St. Mary’s I.C.U. for their kindness, support and the wonderful care that they provided.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014 at 12 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, 4 Union City Road, Prospect. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the church. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Sept., 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery.
