NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck schools food services department kicked off its annual summer lunch program this week.

The department held a ceremony Monday for the program, followed by volunteers who canvassed the community letting people know about the free lunches.

They placed information on homeowners’ properties or handed it to them if they were home.

Tuesday was the first day of the lunch program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This is the fifth year in which Naugatuck has participated in the program. Anyone under the age of 18 can get a free lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at any of the following locations: Andrew Avenue School, Baummer Pond, Central Avenue School, City Hill Middle School, Hop Brook School, Legion Park, Salem School and the Naugatuck YMCA

Last year, 8,400 free lunches were given out in Naugatuck.
