NAUGATUCK — Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries following a head-on collision late Friday morning on New Haven Road.

The accident occurred in the area of the former Peter Paul lot at around 11 a.m. It involved a black BMW X5 and a black Mercedes ML350.

Capt. Vincent Healy of the Naugatuck Fire Department said the drivers of each SUV were the only ones in the vehicles at the time of the accident, he said. Both had to be extricated from the SUVs by firefighters, he said.

Healy said the drivers were taken to Waterbury area hospitals with what were considered to be serious injuries.

The drivers have not been identified.

New Haven Road between Cross Street and Hazel Avenue was closed from 11:15 a.m. to shortly after 3 p.m. as police investigated the accident.
