Applications for tax programs due in May

NAUGATUCK — The assessor’s office will be accepting applications for the elderly homeowners and local freeze programs through May 15.

To qualify for the homeowners program, applicants must have turned 65 years old in 2013. Their income must not have exceeded $34,100 for a single person or $41,600 for married couple. This income amount must include social security paid during 2013. To qualify for the freeze program, applicants must have turned 70 years old in 2013. Their income must not have exceeded $34,100 for a single person or $41,600 for married couple. This income amount must include social security paid during 2013, and assets cannot exceed $125,000.

Permanently and totally disabled individuals are eligible to receive benefits under the homeowners program regardless of age, provided all other criteria are met. An applicant’s original notice of award letter from the Social Security Administration and their SSA1099 form from the social security department is required as proof.
