NAUGATUCK — Mr. Manuel G. Gomes, 69, of Naugatuck, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at his home after a long illness from complications with dementia. He was the husband of Maria Fatima (Batista) Gomes.
Mr. Gomes was born in Antigo, Montalegre, Portugal on April 18, 1944, son of the late Agostinho Gomes and Maria Goncalves Lage Gomes. He immigrated to the United States in 1968 from Portugal and made his home in Naugatuck. He worked for various construction companies for many years. He was an avid soccer fan, enjoyed gardening, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Besides his wife of 47 years, he leaves his sons, Carlos M. Gomes and Agostinho Gomes both of Naugatuck; his sisters, Esaura Ribeiro of Naugatuck, Teresa Moreno of Florida, and Agostinha Gomes of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Matthew W. Gomes, Carlos M. Gomes, Jr., Karissa Lynn Gomes, and Lily M. Gomes-Daris; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Jose Gomes.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer Church. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church at 9:45 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be held at the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
