BEACON FALLS — The town is searching for a new finance manager.

Manny Gomes, the former finance manager, submitted his letter of resignation to the Board of Selectmen earlier this month.

Gomes originally sought to resign Jan. 19. During the board’s meeting Jan. 6, First Selectman Christopher Bielik said he sent Gomes an email saying the Jan. 19 resignation did not give the town enough time to find a replacement.

“We may not be able to hire somebody that’s qualified in that time frame. So I’ve asked him to consider extending that,” said Bielik during the meeting.

On Monday Bielik said Gomes agreed to extend his contract through this past Wednesday in order to help the town with the audit that is currently taking place.

Bielik said the town advertised for the position earlier this month and the application deadline closed on Tuesday.

Bielik said he hoped that the search to find a new finance manager would not be lengthy and have little impact on the upcoming 2014-15 budget.

“With someone new coming in, it will depend on level of experience in municipal budgets,” Bielik said. “Ideally we will find someone who can just step in and go forward.”

In his letter to the board, Gomes, who worked 20 hours a week, said he had originally intended to resign in 2013.

“As I expressed my original intention was to resign by the end of October 2013, but with the election, the instillation of new software, and the late start to the audit, I felt it was in the best interest of Beacon Falls that I continue. With all of these issues coming to a conclusion, the onset of a new budget process, and my personal matters still ongoing, Jan. 19 is best for all parties,” Gomes wrote.
