BEACON FALLS — On the day that was to be her last as director of the Beacon Falls Library, Marsha Durley decided retirement can wait.

On Friday morning Durley handed a letter of “unretirement” to First Selectman Gerard Smith.

“It was a wonderful and shocking surprise,” Smith said.

On Monday, the Board of Selectman approved her request, allowing Durley to officially continue her post at the library.

Durley said she decided to not retire for personal and professional reasons.

“I just realized there would be a better time for me to do this,” Durley simply said.

Durley, 67 of Plymouth, has been director of the library for more than 14 years. Earlier this year, she announced her plans to retire July 26. Those plans are now on hold.

Durley’s career began in the Plymouth Public Library in 1996. She worked in Plymouth for four months before moving to the Beardsley and Memorial Library in Winsted as the head of adult circulation. Over the 14 years Durley has been in Beacon Falls, the library has quadrupled its annual circulation.
