NAUGAUTCK — The actions of two borough firefighters, while not on duty, earned the men recognition.

On March 21, firefighters Tom Moore and Tim Andrew received Liberty Mutual’s Firemark Award. Residents nominated them for the award, which goes to firefighters who have volunteered in the community.

“We began the local program to recognize firefighters throughout the country that best represent their communities through courageous acts and best demonstrate firefighter selfless spirit,” Liberty Mutual senior branch manager Gino Mancini said during a brief ceremony to recognize Moore and Andrew at the fire department downtown.

Moore is the chairman of the Fill the Boot Campaign for Muscular Dystrophy, the chairman for the Toys for Tots Campaign and has been a mentor in the public school system since 2000.

Richard Serafino, a guidance counselor at City Hill Middle School, nominated Moore, Mancini said.

“As a guidance counselor in the middle school I see first hand the positive impact he has on the students he mentors,” Serafino wrote.

Andrew was nominated by realtor Mike Kelly, Mancini said.

Kelly dropped off newspaper articles that pointed out how many charities Andrew has helped out with, even while battling his own cancer, and the fact that he was an Easter Seals mentor.

“(Kelly) actually came in to the office and spoke very highly of you,” Mancini told Andrew. “He dropped off all the newspaper clippings.”

Andrew said that he could not have done it all by himself.

“A lot of this is with the firefighters here that also support me. So, it’s because these guys helped me a lot. This is the greatest department in the world,” Andrew said.

Mancini said the award is given out annually for either community service or heroic actions. Firefighters can be nominated at www.BeFireSmart.com.
