WATERBURY — State Rep. Theresa Conroy (D-105) spoke on the importance of investing in higher education during Naugatuck Valley Community College’s legislative forum in Waterbury.

Conroy said, during the Jan. 18 forum, it’s especially vital to invest in the state’s 17 institutions in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities.

“Naugatuck Valley Community College has provided an important road to self-improvement and higher education for thousands of students over the past four decades,” Conroy said in a statement. “The state’s investment in quality higher education has paid huge dividends.”

Conroy went on to praise Naugatuck Valley Community College’s history of student success. Pass rates on certification and licensure exams are at or near 100 percent, according to a release. In addition, NVCC has virtually doubled the number of associates degrees and certificates issued over the past four years. The school was recently chosen as one of the state’s three Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centers.

Conroy also hailed NVCC for training the next generation of healthcare professionals.

“We continue to see the need for trained professionals in the field of healthcare,” said Conroy, an advance practice registered nurse, in a statement. “NVCC’s nursing and healthcare programs are helping people find good jobs in this tough economy.”
