HARTFORD — State Rep. Rosa Rebimbas (R-70) has been named Ranking Member of the legislature’s Judiciary Committee by House Republican Leader Larry Cafero.

Rebimbas, an attorney with her own law practice with offices in Naugatuck and Danbury, will be the first woman to serve as Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee since Antonina “Nina” Parker held the position in 1984, according to a release issued by Rebimbas’ office.

“I am honored Rep. Cafero chose to name me ranking member of the Judiciary Committee,” Rebimbas said in the release. “As an attorney, I know first-hand how laws impact our state and its residents, and the work the Judiciary Committee does is incredibly important to each and every one of us. I am ready and willing to work hand-in-hand with the Democratic chair and my fellow committee members to craft meaningful legislation during the upcoming session.”

The Judiciary Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to courts, judicial procedures, criminal law, probate courts, probation, parole, wills, estates, adoption, divorce, bankruptcy, escheat, law libraries, deeds, mortgages, preservation of land records and other public documents, the law of business organizations, uniform laws, validations, authorizations to sue and to appeal, and claims against the state. The committee also oversees all judicial nominations, nominations of workers’ compensation commissioners, members of the Board of Pardons and Paroles and all matters relating to the Judicial Department, the Department of Correction and the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities.

Rebimbas will also serve on the Government Administration and Elections Committee and the Finance Committee.

The Government Administration and Elections Committee deals with all matters relating to the Department of Administrative Services, the Department of Public Works, and all matters relating to state government organization, structures and procedures. In addition, the committee oversees the Freedom of Information Commission and the Ethics Commission.

The Finance Committee has jurisdiction over all matters relating to finance, revenue, capital bonding, fees and taxation. The committee also deals with employer contributions for unemployment compensation and all matters relating to the Department of Revenue Services and the revenue aspects of the Division of Special Revenue.

Rebimbas is in her third term representing the 70th House District in Naugatuck.

“The people of Naugatuck put their trust in me and I am humbled and proud to be their voice in Hartford,” Rebimbas said in the release.
