PROSPECT — The town’s heavy equipment will not have to spend another winter in the cold.

Ground has been broke, and the footings and foundation have been poured for the new public works heated garage at 221 Cheshire Road. The new garage will be located behind the existing public works building.

According to Town Council Chair Tom Galvin, the garage is 40-by-60 feet. It was built by Pisani Steel Fabrication Inc. of Naugatuck, he said, and is expected to arrive Sept. 17.

The garage is expected to up and running before the first snowfall.

“This will put $1.1 million of heavy equipment inside and not in the elements,” Mayor Robert Chatfield said.

Chatfield said the garage will help increase the life of the heavy equipment by bringing it indoors.

The town received a Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant of $200,000 to pay for the garage. The grant covered all but approximately $6,000 of the cost, which was paid for out of the town’s general funds.

In addition to storing the heavy machinery, the new garage will house other equipment during the wintertime. This will give the public works department more room in the current building when the snowplows and sanders are attached to the truck, Chatfield said. He said that the snowplows add an additional 15 feet to the front of the trucks, while the sanders add an additional four feet to the back of the trucks.
