HARTFORD — Three local students were among 40 college students honored at the 2012 College Academic Day ceremonies at the state Capitol this week.

Naugatuck residents Samantha Elizabeth Cool, a Central Connecticut State University student, and Sarah Anne Miller, a Naugatuck Valley Community College, student along with Southern Connecticut State University student Jonathan Uhl of Beacon Falls were among students recognized for exceptional classroom achievement in undergraduate studies.

According to a press release issued by the office of state Sen. Joseph Crisco, Jr. (D-17), the event was the 15th annual College Academic Day celebrated by the General Assembly. The event was started, the release stated, to ensure that Connecticut college students are rewarded for excellence in scholastic endeavors that aren’t always recognized as readily or as frequently as other achievements.

“The distinction these exemplary students have earned is a reminder to all of us that the primary purpose of college is the academic education available there,” said Crisco, who was on hand to welcome the students. “As legislators, we often describe how today’s education system is directly connected with tomorrow’s workforce and these students honored here today suggest Connecticut is successfully preparing a well-educated, well-prepared, and well trained workforce.”

Crisco added, “I’m delighted our part of the state is so well represented at today’s College Academic Day, and it’s my great pleasure to welcome these local students who are doing so well in their studies.”
