NAUGATUCK — The mysterious white powder mailed to a 123 Cherry St. woman July 28 was table salt, police said Monday.

The substance was tested at a state Department of Public Health laboratory, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation informed police last Thursday of the results, spokesman Lt. Robert Harrison said.

Police said the envelope containing the salt had a return address on it, but they declined to release the address. Borough detectives are investigating to determine whether the sender intended to harass or frighten the woman, Harrison said.

Police evacuated and roped off the Cherry Street building, which includes Mario’s Pizzeria and an apartment above it, for about 36 hours after the woman who lives in the apartment received the envelope.
