NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck Unit #17, American Legion Auxiliary, is asking residents to wear a poppy to honor a veteran.

Wearing a Memorial Poppy during the Memorial Day holiday will honor the memory of Americans who died in the service of their country, as well as all those who served in our armed forces, according to Karen Thompson, president of the auxiliary, in a prepared release.

“Poppy Day” is a memorial to American war dead and a tribute to all who have served in the armed forces of this country. The American Legion first adopted the Memorial Poppy program during the first Legion Convention in October of 1920. The auxiliary adopted the program for Memorial Day in 1921, pledging that 100 percent of donations would be used for the welfare of veterans and their families. This pledge is still honored today.

Poppy Chairman Dorothy R. Knowles and President Thompson announced that members of the legion and auxiliary will be distributing Memorial Poppies throughout Naugatuck as annual Poppy Days are held beginning Thursday, May 26, through Memorial Day.

All donations will benefit the Veterans’ Affairs and Rehabilitation Program of the local unit and post.
