NAUGATUCK – Two separate drunk driving accidents closed Route 63 for much of the early morning hours Saturday, April 23.

At 12:30 a.m. Patrick McGuire, 22, of 15 Commodore Ave., Shelton, was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Pickup and drove off the side of New Haven Road, crashing into a telephone pole, police said. The pole was severed bringing down the pole and wires.

Police closed the road with cones and a police cruiser. Then at 4:02 a.m., Timothy Stumpo, 52, of 44 Osborn Rd, Apt A3, drove a 2003 Ford Mustang through the barricades and struck the rear of the parked cruiser, occupied by Officer John Hutt, a 13-year department member.

No one was injured in the accidents, police said.

Police charged both men with driving under the influence. McGuire also was charged with failure to drive in proper lane.
