David M. Heller

Republican

Board of Education candidate

Why are you running for this position?
“I’m running for reelection to the Board of Education because I continue to want to dedicate my time and efforts to provide the best possible educational opportunities and programs for the students of Naugatuck. All three of my children attended Naugatuck public schools from kindergarten through high school, and all of them obtained an outstanding education that prepared them well for college and adulthood. I am hopeful that I can give back through my efforts on the Board of Education for the many benefits that my family has received from the Naugatuck school system. I firmly believe that the Naugatuck school system provides an outstanding education to our students and I want to do everything possible to continue to help our schools to educate our students and to build a better Naugatuck.”

Have you held public office in the past? If so, what positions and when?
“I have been a member of the Naugatuck Board of Education for the past six years and I have served as the board’s secretary for the past four years.”

What experience makes you qualified for this position?
“My experience as a member of the Naugatuck Board of Education has qualified me to be a dedicated and hard working volunteer in our community. In addition, I have continually made every effort to continue my training as a Board of Education member and I have attended both state and national Board of Education training conferences to improve my knowledge and skills. I also worked as a history teacher for two years at the high school that I attended in New York before I started working as a trial attorney. I believe that both my prior educational experience and my legal training and work experience make me a well qualified candidate for the Board of Education.”

If elected, what are your priorities and goals?
“My goals if reelected are to continue to work hard in order to provide the best education possible for the children of Naugatuck. To work with my fellow Board of Education members to provide the citizens of Naugatuck with a school system that they support and embrace and to engage all members of our community in the improvement and success of our educational system. Some priorities that I believe are important to the success of our school district and issues that need to be addressed include student improvement and achievement, Board of Education funding, maintenance of school buildings, engagement of community members in regard to educational issues, and the recognition of the importance of culture and diversity in our schools.”
