Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.) visited the General DataComm, Inc. in Naugatuck recently to tour the facility, meet with employees, and learn how the company has survived the recent economic downturn.

Founded in 1969, General DataComm designs and manufactures software and hardware communications products to provide audio, video, and data transmissions for government agencies and businesses.

The company once employed over 2,000 in Connecticut, but was hit hard by the economic recession and currently has 61 employees. But with strong investment in research and design, and a talented workforce, General DataComm is rebuilding their company.

“General DataComm is a great example of how businesses can not only survive these tough economic times, but also how they can begin to thrive again. This was a company that employed thousands of Connecticut residents, but like so many others, was forced to downsize as the economy stumbled. But with smart, targeted investments in research and in their highly-skilled workers, I believe they are well-positioned as our economy begins its recovery. These are the kinds of investments we should be making, instead of drastically cutting the funding for research and development, infrastructure, and innovation, as the new House majority has proposed,” said DeLauro, in a prepared statement.

DeLauro said, in the release, that in order to get the economy right the Congress must support companies like General DataComm.

“Small business is the cornerstone of our economy and a key source of employment growth, but access to small business loans is difficult for companies like GDC that invest heavily in new product research and development,” said Bill Henry, the company’s vice president finance and administration, in a prepared statement. “We greatly appreciate the support of legislators like Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro who work to provide capital and incentives to small businesses.”
