Demolition of Naugatuck’s chocolate giant has commenced.

For 88 years, Peter Paul on New Haven Road produced endless supplies of candies such as Mounds, until 2007 when the factory closed its doors in Naugatuck and moved to Virginia.

In late January, workers began tearing down the historic Route 63 landmark as Hershey Foods, which owns the property, clears the way for the eventual sale and development of the land.

The back end of the building has been torn down, and demolition waste will be trucked to landfills in Ohio, according to Building Department records. The estimated cost of the demolition is $520,000, the records show.
