On March 7, Democrats in Naugatuck will have a chance to vote for six of seven candidates for burgess in a primary.

Burgess Anthony Campbell turned in about 350 signatures – 50 more than he needed – before the Feb. 1 deadline to successfully petition for a primary.

Democratic Registrar Louise Sheedy confirmed Tuesday that at least 300 signatures were from registered Democrats, as required by law.

Campbell started collecting signatures after the Democratic Town Committee failed to endorse him for reelection.

The primary ballot will include the six candidates for burgess the Democratic Town Committee endorsed, plus Campbell.

The Democratic endorsed candidates are incumbents Robert Burns, Michael Ciacciarella, Henry Kuczenski, Patrick Scully, and newcomers Rocky Vitale and Laurie Taf Jackson.

All the regular polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Campbell said he hopes those who signed his petition will come through where it really counts- to vote for him in the primary, and if successful, in the general election.

“The majority of them said they’d be out there,” Campbell said.

Although there are about 6,000 registered Democrats in Naugatuck, most of them probably won’t show up for the primary.

“It doesn’t get the turnout that a major election would get,” Campbell said.

Campbell said he wanted to thank the people who helped him garner the signatures as well as those who signed his petition.

“They were all very, very supportive,” he said.
