NAUGATUCK — A New York man has been charged with attempted murder after police said he tried to hire someone to kill his wife.

Jaime Suarez, 39, of Selden, N.Y., asked a co-worker if he knew of someone he could hire to kill his wife, Amanda Dias, who lives on South Main Street in Naugatuck, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Suarez was trying to find someone to kill her because he believed his wife was having an affair with his nephew, Oscar Suarez, the affidavit states.

Suarez was arrested on a warrant Monday, and held overnight on a $500,000 bond to be arraigned Tuesday in Waterbury Superior Court. Suarez is scheduled to return to court Aug. 18.

Naugatuck police launched an investigation July 23 when Dias reported to police that she was aware of her husband making threats to her life, according to the affidavit. Together, they have two children, ages 4 and 2.

Borough police investigated and applied for an arrest warrant, which was issued July 24 by the court. A nationwide extraditable warrant also was issued and sent to law enforcement agencies across the country.

On July 26, the Suffolk County Police Department notified Naugatuck police they had taken Suarez into custody, said Lt. Robert Harrison, department spokesman, in a press release.

After Suarez was arraigned as a fugitive from justice at a Suffolk County courthouse, he waived extradition and Naugatuck police picked him up from a Suffolk County correctional facility on Monday, Harrison said.

According to the affidavit, Davi Oliveira Lima, who worked with Suarez on construction sites, told police that Suarez spoke to him about wanting to have Dias and his nephew killed. Lima, who is also Dias’ friend, told police he had informed Dias of the conversations, the affidavit states.

“I am worried about Amanda and her two children since Jaime spoke to me about killing her on three separate occasions,” Lima said in a notarized statement in the affidavit. “I am afraid that Jaime will kill me if he knew I told anyone about his plan. Jaime is willing to kill his children’s mother so I believe he’s capable of killing me.”

Dias told police that her mother was informed by their pastor from a Danbury church that Suarez told the pastor he wanted to kill his wife and her new boyfriend, Oscar Suarez, the affidavit states.
