NAUGATUCK — The construction project that has been causing delays along Rubber Avenue may end up taking longer than expected.

The project has closed a section of the main road and rerouted drivers to a detour on the adjacent Scott Street. Construction workers have been laboring to replace a culvert, which is used to channel water in the direction of Long Meadow and Pond Brook.

The work was scheduled to be completed late this month, just around the time students are scheduled to head back to school, but new developments may make this project a thorn in travelers’ sides for a little while longer

Construction on Rubber Avenue in Naugatuck may take longer than expected.

“It was supposed to be road-open just about the time school starts at the end of the month,” said James Stewart, the borough’s director of public works. “There have been some additional issues … so it may take a little longer.”

The workers have also run into a few problems with the relocation of a number of AT&T’s fiber optic lines.

The job is contracted through Dayton Construction Company, Inc., a Watertown company.

The project is being paid for with government stimulus money and carries an estimated price tag of $850,000.

No current end date has been determined, but it is likely the project will take longer than initially expected.
