Volunteers needed for holiday dinner

NAUGATUCK — Members of the Ecumenical Conference of Churches of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls will spread the cheer Christmas day by providing a free turkey dinner to the community.

Mike Kelly, the event’s organizer, said since most restaurants close and not everyone has access to a hot meal or company on Christmas, the event provides a place for folks to congregate, enjoy a warm plate, and share the holiday spirit.

The dinner, which has become something of a tradition over the past two decades, will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Saint Michael’s Church hall on the Naugatuck green, 210 Church St.

But feeding hundreds of people is no small task, and Kelly said the Conference is looking for volunteers, especially bakers, to help cook the food and prepare the hall for the event.

Bakers can donate desserts like cakes, cookies and pies, but no cream desserts can be accepted.

On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, volunteers can assist in food prep, decoration, and carving (helpers should bring their own knives).

The Conference also needs drivers to deliver meals to the homebound (11:00 a.m. on Dec. 25), servers (11:45 on Dec. 25), and a clean-up crew (1:30 – 3:00 p.m. on Dec. 25).

Those who wish to have a meal delivered can call Mike Kelly at (203) 723-1640.
