Woodland vs. Naugy in girls’ tennis final

BEACON FALLS — It will be an all-local Naugatuck Valley League girls’ tennis final this evening. Top-seeded Woodland knocked off No. 4 St. Paul, 5-2, and No. 2 Naugatuck beat No. 3 Seymour by the same margin Monday afternoon to set up the championship round, which is expected to start around 5 p.m.

Both squads won three of their four singles matches to seize control early. For the Hawks, Badale topped Jordyn Rombola, 8-5; Wester beat Emma Mazzone, 8-6; and Tremaglio defeated Emily Appel, 8-6. Dragon sustained the lone loss, 8-5, to Zagaja Karolinka at fourth singles.

On the doubles side, Angeloszek and Pagoni bested Rachelle Klapheke and Allison Valentine, 8-2, and Vallillo and Gartman won, 8-5, against Maxx Flippinger and Christina Mueller. Nelson and Olivera fell against Kelsey Bourque and Erin Coombs, 8-5.

The Greyhounds advanced, despite losses by their No. 1 singles and doubles entries. Toth struggled to an 8-3 defeat in her meeting with the Falcons’ Christina O’Hara, and Dana and Quarles took an 8-2 loss against Christine Moon and Elli Emmanouil.

Their teammates picked them up. Yacavone overcame two match points, rallying from a 7-6 deficit to beat Brittany Guard, 9-7, at second singles. Jang knocked off Brianna Zenkus, 8-5, and Carter took down Evelyn Roman, 8-3.

Charette and Mitchell defeated Mary Bylo and Kellyn Uhlesky, 8-4, and Bottinick and Young topped Shannon Landock and Danielle Sahni, 8-3.
