NAUGATUCK – Students and faculty at St. Francis of Assisi School in Naugatuck thought long and hard about the true meaning of Christmas, and decided that the best way to celebrate the birth of Jesus would be to reach out to others by way of a special event called, Kids C.A.R.E. Luncheon. (The word C.A.R.E. appropriately stands for Community Awareness and Responsibility of Each Other.) The luncheon will take place on Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Church Hall located at 318 Church St., Naugatuck, and is open to anyone who wants to be treated to a free lunch, and some kindness.

“Our students know that some people don’t have enough food to eat. They’ve visited local senior centers, convalescent homes, and have donated to local food banks. The Kids C.A.R.E. Luncheon is a way for them to give back to those in need, or to spend time with someone who may not have a friend to share a meal with,” said Deborah Pisciotti, a teacher at St. Francis and event planner. “We want to be like Jesus and help others.”

Every student – from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade – will be involved with the luncheon. Jobs will range from sandwich preparation to servers, from cookie bakers to Christmas decorators, and from Christmas card designers to students who meet and greet.

The menu will consist of a variety of sandwiches, along with yogurt, fruit, beverages and homemade Christmas cookies. Each lunch will also include a homemade Christmas card created by the students.

Fr. Michael Slusz, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church, is very proud of the students, and how they have captured the true meaning of Christmas.

“Part of our school’s mission statement is to love and serve one another and the students at St. Francis

are taking the mission literally by sharing with others, who may not have as much as they have emotionally, spiritually, and monetarily, the love that they receive from the Lord,” said Slusz. “My prayer for them is that this act of love and kindness be a life-changing experience for them. That they always try to help people in need, not only during Christmas, but throughout their lives.”
