NAUGATUCK — The defending Naugatuck Valley League football champions are back to work and are getting ready for a trip north of the border—Massachusetts, not Canada—for their first game of 2011.

Citizen’s News caught up with Naugy’s three seniors—Jake Yourison, Nico Cari, and Mike Giugno—at practice last week to get their thoughts on the upcoming season. Yourison and Giugno are both ready to go for the opener on Sept. 16 in East Longmeadow, Mass., but Cari will be sidelined at least a few weeks—and according to head coach Rob Plasky, maybe the season—due to a broken finger suffered in a scrimmage at Amity.

Below is Naugatuck’s preview capsule, featuring this year’s key players and thoughts on the team and league from Plasky. CN will have an in-depth preview of the ‘Hounds before they open the season against the Spartans.

Coach’s Thoughts: “We are looking to feed off of last year’s success and continue to be consistent with everything we do. We have enough returning players to lead this team as it was led in 2010. We have a very good running game that should complement our passing attack. The off-season workouts went well and we are looking to carry that over to game one. Our kids show up every day hungry and they work very hard to make us a contender again. We need to stay healthy and our goals will remain to win the Copper Division, NVL title and secure a playoff berth.”
