The Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouting, and is the highest Award possible for girls ages 11 to 14 years old.
The Girl Scout Silver Award represents accomplishments within scouting and the community, empowering girls to improve their own life, as well as the lives of others with components that build personal skills, encourage commitment to self improvement, provide leadership opportunities, and explore potential career choices.
In addition to a variety of Interest Patch and other scouting work, the girls must plan and execute a specific community service project, all of which must be completed prior to entering freshman year of high school.
Fox and Card’s project included an extensive book drive to collect reading material for the St. Mary’s Children’s and Family Health Center. Their donations allowed the children who use this facility to take a gently-used book home with them. The girls collected approximately 500 books, and made book marks for the children emphasizing the importance of individual and family reading.
They also hand-made a bookshelf, making it possible for the center to display and store the books.
The girls delivered the shelf and donations in June of 2010, completing the requirements for the Silver Award. They were recently presented with their hard-earned Silver Award pins at a special ceremony with their families and other girls at their troop meeting.
