Whitney Stow of Beacon Falls recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. In order to earn the Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girls Scouts, scouts spend at least 80 hours researching issues, assessing community needs and resources, building a team and making a sustainable impact in the community. Stow raised awareness of the dangers of texting and driving to the junior and senior classes at Woodland Regional High School. She organized a presentation in partnership with Survive the Drive and created her own video. -CONTRIBUTED
Algonquin School third-grader Aidan Fox of Prospect was one of eight winners from New Haven Country in the statewide CHET Dream Big! Competition. The contest features two entry categories based on grade level. Students from kindergarten to third grade submitted drawings expressing what they want to do after college. Students in fourth and fifth grade wrote an essay answering the question, “How will I change the world after college?” Award winners were honored at a recent ceremony at Rentschler Field in East Hartford and won a $500 contribution to a CHET college savings account. Fox was also recognized June 2 at the school by state Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-89), who presented him with a special citation from the General Assembly. -CONTRIBUTED

Lindsay Hawthorne of Prospect recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. In order to earn the Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girls Scouts, scouts spend at least 80 hours researching issues, assessing community needs and resources, building a team and making a sustainable impact in the community. Hawthorne created the Violence Against Women Awareness Campaign, which shed light on the issue of human trafficking and online predators. She planned and hosted an evening event for students, community members and teachers to learn how state troopers catch online predators. She also organized the 1Billion Rising flash mob dance at Woodland, which will be held next year. -CONTRIBUTED
Emily Trumbley of Prospect recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. In order to earn the Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girls Scouts, scouts spend at least 80 hours researching issues, assessing community needs and resources, building a team and making a sustainable impact in the community. Trumbley developed a two-year summer chapel curriculum for area churches to utilize, helping them address a need for summer engagement of youth. A copy of this curriculum was given to the United Church of Christ Connecticut Conference Library so that churches around and outside the state could utilize the curriculum in the future. -CONTRIBUTED

Jane Pinho of Prospect has been named chairwoman of the 2014 Business Women’s Forum. Pinho, branch manager of the Ion Bank in Prospect, will oversee coordination of the annual, all-day, career-development conference for women. The forum is a program of the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The overall mission of the forum is to raise monies for a scholarship fund for female Post University students to pursue business educations. ‘BWF’s continual commitment has been to the equality of opportunity and advancement for women in business,’ said Pinho in a press release. “During the past 31 years, the BWF has generated in excess of $185,000 toward those scholarships.The forum will be held Oct. 10 in Southington. The Naugatuck All Stars, the Naugatuck Youth Soccer U-15 boys competition team, won the Connecticut Cup championship game, 1-0, against Stamford June 14 in Farmington. The team followed up that victory by winning the Cheshire Invitational Tournament June 15. The team went undefeated in the regular season as well to win its division in the South Central Connecticut District. The All Stars ended a perfect season on June 21 as 2014 spring season champions.
