Charles Boulier III, president and chief executive officer of Ion Bank and its parent, Ion Financial MHC, has been elected chairman of America’s Mutual Banks, a national association of mutual financial institutions. Boulier, 57, will serve a two-year term as chairman that ends in January 2016, the AMB has announced. The Washington D.C.-based association is dedicated to preserving, advocating and advancing the mutual banking business model. As the AMB’s new chairman, Boulier heads a team of five newly elected officers. He served a one-year term as the association’s second vice chairman that ended Dec. 31. –CONTRIBUTED
Woodland senior Alik Bures, center, signed his National Letter of Intent Monday night to play football at Southern Connecticut State University. The 6-foot-7, 297-pounder started at left tackle for the Hawks, who were the Class S and Naugatuck Valley League runners-up in 2013. ‘I really like the campus, the facilities and the coaching staff,’ Bures said. ‘As long as I work hard, I know I can go far.’ Bures’ parents, Craig and Kristin, joined him for the signing. The Cross Street Intermediate School Student Council led a drive, its ‘Souper Bowl,’ to collect non-perishable items to benefit the Naugatuck Ecumenical Food Bank. Leading up to the Super Bowl Feb. 2, students and staff brought in food items and placed them in the collection area designated for their favorite team playing in the big game — the Denver Broncos or the Seattle Seahawks. It was the second time this school year the council led a food drive. A drive in the fall collected over $700 worth of food. The City Hill Middle School swim team placed seventh out of 14 teams at the state championships Feb. 1. The team had a late start to its season, due to the ongoing construction Naugatuck High School, but won three out of its four meets this year. The team had more than 80 percent best times at the championships and several top finishers. Brian Goggin is the state champion in the 50 breaststroke and finished third in the 50 butterfly. Dale Wakeley finished fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle. The boys 200 free relay team — Johnathan Lauer, Shane Carey, Wakeley and Goggin — won the event with a time of 1:52.41, almost 3 seconds ahead of second place. –CONTRIBUTED
Cub Scouts from the Webelo II group from Prospect recently visited the fish hatchery in Burlington to earn their Wildlife Badge. The boys learned about how lakes, rivers, and ponds are stocked and got to see an eagle in a tree waiting to get a fish.
