The Naugatuck Elk Lodge is hosting the Battle of the Sauces Jan. 25 at the lodge, 58 Rubber Ave., from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will feature 12 amateur chefs making different types of sauces. Tickets are $10 and it costs $1 per vote for a sauce. The proceeds from the event will benefit The Sandy Ground: Where Angels Play. The program is building 26 playgrounds across the state both in memory of the children who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the December 2012 shooting and working to beautify areas that were impacted by Superstorm Sandy. –CONTRIBUTED West Point Cadet Sarah Melville, a 2010 graduate of Woodland Regional High School, is a member of the West Point Parachute Team that competed in USPA National Collegiate Parachuting Championships Dec. 27 to Jan. 2 in Lake Wales, Fla. The collegiate competition is an annual event that brings universities from across the nation to compete in both freefall and accuracy events. At the end of the competition, the Black Knights came away with eight Gold medals, eight Silvers medals, and 11 Bronze medals. Melville, who will join the U.S. Army as an engineer in May, competed in 4-Way Relative Formation, 6-Way Speed and Classic Accuracy, earning a silver medal for Team Classic Accuracy.
