Dad’s Nite at the Firehouse was held Dec. 4 at the Naugatuck fire headquarters on Maple Street. The event is for children from the Naugatuck Head Start program and the significant male in their lives. The children were given a goodie bag, fire hat and a disposable camera. The evening started with the children being read a story, a firefighter in full gear met with the children, then Sparky the Fire Dog led the children to the apparatus floor, where they were allowed to climb in the fire trucks. The event is sponsored by Firefighters Union Local 1219 with the proceeds from its Easter flower sale. –CONTRIBUTED

Naugatuck Junior Girl Scout Troop 64555 has earned the Bronze Award, which is a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. For their Bronze Award project the girls chose to do a project to benefit cancer patients undergoing treatment. The girls learned how to finger knit so that they could make hats and held a month-long blanket drive to collect blankets. The troop received help from the fifth grade class at St. Francis-St. Hedwig School. Several troop members taught the class how to knit and they contributed their efforts to the project. The girls recently delivered 44 blankets and 12 hats to the Harold Leever Cancer Center in Waterbury. The girls will receive their Bronze Awards at a ceremony in the spring. Prospect resident Lukas Fedak, a junior at Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury, (pictured last on the right in the front row) is a member of the school’s mock trial team, which competed against 68 teams at the statewide mock trial competition Dec. 2 in Danbury Superior Court. Similar to a real trial, the teams must prepare and deliver opening statements, direct examinations of their own witnesses, cross examinations of the opposing teams’ witnesses and closing arguments. –CONTRIBUTED
The Naugatuck All Stars basketball travel team recently wrapped up the season with a record of 35-13. The team placed in several tournaments this year, including winning the Avon Classic, coming in second place in the Hartford Classic and B.P.T. Love Life Summer Tournament, as well as third place finishes in the Cardinal Sheehan Center Spring League and L.N.V. Shelton Boys Club Fall League. Members of The Legionnaires from The Seminary in Cheshire perform during the Naugatuck Woman’s Club Christmas luncheon Dec. 2 at the Continental Room in Naugatuck. The Brothers had lunch with the club, then performed holiday music acapella. The club also collected donations for Toys for Tots and the Naugatuck Ecumenical Food Bank during the luncheon, which was the club’s final meeting until April. Naugatuck YMCA youth karate students, front row from left, Rebecca Santos, David Fernandes and Paul Melo received their green belt 6 on Dec. 12. They were graded by Grand Master Robert Cheezic at USA Martial Arts in Naugatuck. The students were graded on the discipline and skills they learned, demonstrated four forms and spared other students. Their instructor, 7 degree master belt Joe Antonucci (pictured with the students) also provided over the grading.
