The Union City Little League Giants won the minors division championship. The Giants finished the regular season undefeated, lost once during the playoffs and bounced back to win the championship. The Giants finished the season 17-1. ‘These kids remained positive, cheered on their team the entire game, and made great hits and plays in the field all season long,’ head coach Charlie Alexander said. The evening highlighted new programs and looked forward to focusing on programming and enhancing member services. The Capital Campaign, which began in 2006, was brought to a close this evening by acknowledging the members of the Capital Campaign Cabinet; Chairman Paul Fitzpatrick and Campaign Cabinet members, Kevin DelGobbo, Kevin McSherry, Rebecca Zandvliet and Dave Rogers.Three awards were given out during the meeting. The Chittenden Group received the Jeffrey Witherwax Community Leadership Award. Naugatuck Tax Collector Jim Goggin received the Robert Whittemore Unsung Hero Award, and Marcelo Martins received the Fredrick D. Zonino Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award.

VNA HealthCare recently received a $50,000 grant from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority to support its Meals on Wheels program. The grant will allow the agency to deliver approximately 5,000 additional meals to those who need assistance with paying for meals. “This grant will provide about 5,000 home delivered, nutritious meals to over 200 individuals in need. Such a partnership of public and private dollars will help ease Connecticut’s pangs of hunger and give our neighbors a better chance of healthy, productive lives,” President and CEO of VNA HealthCare Ellen Rothberg said in a news release. VNA HealthCare provides home health care, hospice care and private duty independent living services to more than 60 towns in central Connecticut and greater Waterbury. The Camille B. Perugini Charitable Trust awarded 10 scholarships totaling $11,000 June 25 during an awards dinner at Jesse Camille’s Restaurant in Naugatuck. The scholarship was created in 1997 in memory of Camille B. Perugini, a 1988 Wolcott High Graduate and a 1992 graduate of Boston College, who passed away in 1997 unexpectedly from an undiagnosed medical condition. Over $25,000 was raised during the Seventh Annual DiMatteo Family Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament recently at Oronoque Country Club in Stratford. The money will go to three charities, including Project Purple in Beacon Falls. Project Purple is a non-profit foundation founded by Beacon Falls resident Dino Verrelli to raise awareness and funds to fight pancreatic cancer. Prospect’s U-12 Girls Travel Team ended their spring season undefeated in league play (10 and 1 overall) to win the South Central Division bracket. They also clinched the U-12 girls Division Championship title at the South Central District Joseph A. Conte Tournament in Cheshire in June.
