The award is presented to one male and one female student in each middle school whose record of academic achievement and service have been truly exemplary, whose personal standards and accomplishments are a model for others and who possess high levels of integrity, self discipline, honesty and courage. C-SPAN was at the library to film author Maury Klein of Rhode Island as he discussed his new book, ‘A Call to Arms.’ The talk will appear on Book TV, a C-SPAN program dedicated to non-fiction books. Stephens said people can check booktv.org and see when Klein’s talk is scheduled to air. Teixeira graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Teixeira completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Teixeira is the son of Antonia and Cesar Teixeira of Prospect. He is a 2010 graduate of Woodland Regional High School. -CONTRIBUTED Chris Monaco of Naugatuck recently met University of Connecticut womens basketball coach Geno Auriemma in Wolcott. Monaco and Auriemma both grew up in Norristown, Pa.-CONTRIBUTED Jacob Nemec of Beacon Falls (fifth from the left in the second row) was among 22 members of Sstomp, a local Catholic youth and adult group with members from Oxford, Seymour and Southbury, who traveled to Keansburg, N.J. the second week of July on a mission trip with Group Workcamps to help residents of the region devastated by Superstorm Sandy. More than 300 teens and adults from across the country camped out in Keansburg High School classrooms and participated in over 60 home repair and construction projects for the elderly, disabled and disaster-stricken residents of the area. Members raised funds and/or paid the $470 cost of the trip out of pocket.
