Joseph Poveromo of Naugatuck was presented with the 2013 Union City Little League Joe Joy Sportsmanship Award June 30 the annual Union City Little League Awards day at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury. The award honors a player for displaying outstanding character and sportsmanship on and off the field. He will be entering City Hill Middle School in the fall. Naugy Chargers, a U13 Naugatuck girls soccer team, won the Guilford Soccerfest tournament the weekend of June 29. The tournament concluded the girls’ last season playing together as they will head to high school in the fall. The team also took first place in the Clinton tournament earlier this season. The Horgan Academy of Irish Dance celebrated a school year full of dancers’ accomplishments at its recent annual recital. Dancers from ages 2 to adult, beginner to champion levels, performed for the public at the Horgan Academy’s annual stage production. Also performed was the Irish dance drama depicting the true story of the 100th year anniversary of Ireland’s Fr. Francis Brown and the Titanic. A team of 20 prize-winning and champion Horgan Academy dancers from the Greater Waterbury, New Milford, Bethlehem and Cheshire areas performed this story through dance at the New England Championships and at the World Championships. Three 2013 Maura Gill Horgan Memorial College Scholarships were awarded to three Horgan Academy high school seniors — Alyssa Gaskin from Sacred Heart High School, Lila Purvis from Cheshire High School and Christain Cairone from Emmett O’Brien Technical High School. Christine Koster of Naugatuck has named vice president of business banking at Naugatuck Savings Bank. Koster joined the bank’s commercial lending department where she will work closely with local businesses to assist them in managing their finances. Prior to joining Naugatuck Savings Bank, Koster worked for 15 years in the business banking group at RSB-Citizens Bank where she was responsible for building relationships with the bank’s business clients in both New Haven and Fairfield Counties.
Koster began her banking career in Southampton, N.Y., before she and her husband, Peter, moved to Connecticut in 1994. –CONTRIBUTED

The DAR Continental Congress is a time-honored tradition. National, state and chapter leaders from around the world meet at the DAR National Headquarters to report on the year’s work, honor outstanding award recipients, plan future initiatives and reconnect with friends. Naugatuck Elite Extreme, a Naugatuck Youth Soccer U11 boys team, won the Seaside Classic tournament, in South County, R.I. July 13 and July 14 sweeping all four games.
Naugatuck’s Zach Koslosky, Branden Lage, Nelson Lavoura, Fred Longo, Alex Manasoiu, Brian Portela, Brian Silva and Matthew Smith combined for 17 goals for the tournament. Naugatuck’s defense was just as strong as goalies Michael Connan and Brandon Sampaio limited opponents to just four goals for the tournament with the help of a rock solid defense led Zach Koslosky, Dylan Gloden and Matthew Smith. Eduardo Garcia also contributed. ‘I am very proud of my team they worked hard all season and continued to get better, I want to thank them for their hard work and a special thank you to my assistant coach Daniel Lavoura who helped to develop these boys skills. We may only be a town travel team, but I would put these boys up against any premier team and this past weekend proves it,’ head coach Glenn Connan said. In lieu of trophies for the winners, a check for $3,000 was issued to Newtown Youth Soccer Club in the name Naugatuck Elite Extreme and the Seaside Classic Champions.
