Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan President and CEO Bill Calderara, right, awards Maria Teixeira of Naugatuck the Donald G. Brubaker Memorial Scholarship recently. Teixeira is a graduate of Holy Cross High School in Waterbury. The $1,000 scholarship was established in honor of former Naugatuck Valley Chairman of the Board Donald Brubaker and is open to Naugatuck High School seniors, residents of Naugatuck attending area high schools, customers or children of customers of the bank regardless of their residency or the school they attend, who plan to continue their education. Cub Scouts with Pack 27 from Prospect pose for a picture after planting flowers in front of the old firehouse May 18. The scouts slept out on the Town Green May 17 and planted the flowers when they woke up. The scouts were thanked by Mayor Robert Chatfield for their hard work. Currie of Naugatuck was recognized with the award at the hospital’s 43rd Annual Service Awards Dinner at the Crowne Plaza in Southbury. The award recognizes healthcare workers who promote patient-and person-centered care by personalizing the health care experience. He was selected for the award for his commitment to excellent service, professionalism and his ability to create a positive work environment. ‘Mike has a passion for seeking out work and ensuring the outcome is positive,’ Griffin Hospital CEO Charmel said in a press release. ‘He is known by his peers for his kindness and energy. He is seen as a very positive person and exhibits a ‘win-win’ philosophy. The combination of his ethical standards and vast experience enable him to be an excellent mentor to other employees. Marimekala played ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ by Elton John and ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by James Horner on stage while the Rubber City Blues Band took a break. It is Marimekala’s dream to perform in front of large audiences and the opportunity presented itself at Duck Day. Marimekala also performed earlier this year at his church in Oxford for Easter. Griffin Hospital nurses, from left, Kathryn Dibona, RN, of Naugatuck, Paulina Jaworski, RN, and Maureen Smith, RN, of Beacon Falls were named 2013 Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing winners.The Nightingale Awards program recognizes nurses throughout Connecticut for their dedication, commitment and generous contributions to the field of nursing. Fabrizi, a staff nurse at Masonicare at Newtown in Newtown, was honored at a special awards dinner May 9 at the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa. Dibona and Smith, who both work at Griffin Hospital in Derby, were recognized during the hospital’s Nurses’ Week luncheon and awards ceremony recently. Dibona also earned Griffin Hospital’s Outstanding Nurse of the Year Award.Dibona has worked at the hospital for 11 years starting as a member of the distribution department before becoming certified as a multi-skilled technician and then as a registered nurse. She is currently a night-shift nurse on the hospital’s telemetry unit. -CONTRIBUTED
