The derby is the troop’s largest fundraiser for the year. Over 50 cars raced in the derby. Dave Rybinski won first place. Eric VonDwingelo was the second place winner. Rich Rioux, the third place winner, hosted and ran the event with Joe Wall. Troop 104 thanked everyone who participated, and all the businesses that sponsored a Pinewood Derby car or donated a raffle prize. The team lost to Watertown, 3-0, before beating Burlington, 14-10, Cheshire, 11-7, Watertown, 14-1, and Overlook, 18-10, in the championship game. Fran Phelan was the winning pitcher and Pat Browne added 3 hits in the championship. New Opportunities, Inc. hosted Mayors Deliver Meals Day as a part of its March for Meals campaign. A number of elected officials participated in the event to show their support for their community’s homebound seniors. Mayors Deliver Meals is a national campaign initiated by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. Students demonstrated skills in sparring, forms, board breaking, Asian weapons, rolls and break falls. Four members were invited to grade to 1st Dan Black Belt on Sept. 13. The Naugatuck Exchange Club, which works to raise awareness of child abuse, is marking the month by keeping the tree lit on the Green with blue lights. This is the first year the club has lit the tree for awareness.
