Hillside Intermediate School fifth-grader Hailey Russell, center, holds up her winning fire prevention poster with her teacher Mark Solomito, right, and Acting Deputy Fire Marshall Bill Scanlon, left, at her side in the school in Naugatuck last Friday. Russell’s poster won first place in the fifth-grade category at the New Haven County competition. She is the first student from Naugatuck to win the competition in the seven years the borough has been entering the competition. The top four winners from each of the state’s eight counties will move on to the state competition and be honored at a luncheon March 27. Russell’s poster will also be displayed in the legislative building in Hartford in October, as part of Fire Prevention Month and be featured in a 2014 Fire Prevention calendar. –LUKE MARSHALL
