No. 1 organized a work detail to help clear brush from along Naugatuck River Greenway Nov. 10. A dozen members of the fire company were on hand with chainsaws and brush trimmers to cut back overgrowth and create a more scenic view of the river from the walking path. Local contractor Charles Edwards donated the use of his wood chipper and his time to the effort as well. The volunteers spent 10 hours on the project, which is still not complete. Another work session will be planned to finish off the project. –CONTRIBUTED Shayla Shaw of Naugatuck celebrated her eighth birthday Nov. 17 at Kids Create in Naugatuck. Instead of gifts, Shaw asked her Maple Hill School classmates to bring hats, gloves, and scarves for the Naugatuck food bank. Shaw collected 19 scarves, 35 hats and 45 pairs of gloves. Shaw also donated $20 that she received in a birthday card to the food bank as well. The event raised over $2,000 for the foundation, which awards grants to teachers and their students in Naugatuck schools. NEF board member Matt Fortney announced during the event that the current round of grants for teachers and their students will be funded up to $10,000, and the board set a deadline of Jan. 18, 2013 for applications.
