Mr. and Mrs. John C. DiFelice of Naugatuck will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a celebration at the family’s summer home in Canaan. Mr. and Mrs. DiFelice were married April 29, 1977, at Prospect Congregational Church of Prospect by Rev. Gregory Weider. They have five children, Donald Savoy Sr. of Waterbury, Richard DeFelice Sr. of Waterbury, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Savoy of Waterbury, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Savoy of Torrington and Robert Savoy of Thomaston and several grandchildren. Long River Middle School sixth-grade students Sarah Cooley and Emma Fabrizi were the winner and runner-up, respectively, of a Women’s History Month essay contest sponsored by state representatives Lezlye Zupkus, R-89th District, and Nicole Klarides-Ditria, R-105th District. Students from Beacon Falls and Prospect wrote essays on ‘How a Connecticut Woman Made a Contribution to the State and Nation and How it Affects Me.’ Cooley wrote her essay on Maria Sanchez, who was the first Hispanic woman elected to the Connecticut General Assembly. Fabrizi, wrote her essay on Alice Paul, who helped bring about the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. The Naugatuck Fire Department recently honored the local winners of 11th annual Connecticut fire prevention poster contest. All Naugatuck students in grades four and five were eligible to compete. The winners in fourth grade were Mariah Hawley (first place) from Maple Hill School, Marcella Baptistim (second place) from St. Francis-St. Hedwig School, and Christie Weir (third place) from Maple Hill School. The winners in fifth grade were Evelyn Morse (first place) from Cross Street Intermediate School, Julia Dumont (second place) from St. Francis-St. Hedwig School, and Aviana Ramos (third place) from Cross Street Intermediate School. Firefighters from the Naugatuck and Waterbury fire departments practice trench rescue techniques with help of members of the Connecticut Fire Academy April 17 at Baummer’s Pond in Naugatuck. The training, which is done annually, teaches firefighters how to safely rescue people who have been trapped in situations such as a foundation collapsing during construction work or when a trench collapses during road work. Members of the Naugatuck Fire Department said these types of rescues aren’t common but do occur. –LUKE MARSHALL
