The Ion Bank Foundation recently awarded grants totaling $60,000 to 56 local non-profit organizations, including 23 from Beacon Falls, Naugatuck and Prospect, at a ceremony as part of its Community Awards Program. The program encouraged Ion Bank customers to vote for a local charity of their choice to receive a grant. Organizations that received at least 1 percent of the total votes received a grant. In addition, for those receiving less than 1 percent of the total votes, a $500 grant was awarded to 20 randomly selected eligible recipients. –CONTRIBUTED

Players from Peter J. Foley and Union City little leagues in Naugatuck competed in the MLB Pitch, Hit, and Run sectionals May 15 at Eugene Hanley Little League in Winsted. Players advanced to the sectionals by winning at least one of four categories — pitching, hitting, base running or all around winner — at the local Pitch, Hit, and Run competition hosted by Naugatuck Parks and Recreation. Woodland Regional High School students watch a live fire demonstration May 27 at the school in Beacon Falls. The demonstration was done by Beacon Hose Company No. 1 and conducted by Woodland student Taylor Docimo for her senior project. The project emphasized fire safety and educated students on the importance of smoke detectors and intriguing fire statistics. Boys Scouts from Troop 102 in Naugatuck spent the weekend of April 29 at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield camping, cooking, and completing a good turn project.
