Members of the High Rock Shooting Association partnered with scouts and family members from Boy Scout Troops 109 and 138 to clean up trash and debris from parts of the Naugatuck State Forest on May 9. Austin Bartlett, a scout from Troop 138, coordinated the participation of his troop in order to gain service hours for rank advancement. The Naugatuck Department of Public Works assisted by removing the resulting pile of trash. After the clean-up was completed, Connecticut Signcraft donated signs, which were installed along the road into the forest to acknowledge the clean-up efforts and to request community support to help keep the area clean. -CONTRIBUTED
Companies working on the new Prospect Elementary School construction project recently donated to the Prospect Flag Fund to help extend the Prospect flag display along Route 69 from the center of town to the new school. USA Martial Arts in Naugatuck celebrated the promotion of nine members of the Kid Kicks class (ages 5 and 6) at a graduation May 18. Woodland Regional High School senior Meghan Terry hosted the Film Showcase April 24 at the school as her senior project. Terry accepted donations as well as made a program and ad book that raised $612 to start a Digital Media Arts Scholarship. The event showcased 16 films, commercials and public service announcements all made by Woodland students. Boy Scout Troop 109 from Naugatuck recently visited Washington, D.C. The scouts camped at the National Campground, visited national monuments, toured the U.S. Capitol building and worked on requirements for their Citizenship in the Nation merit badge. The fencing team of, from left, Janice Midgely, of Eatontown, N.J., Melissa Woundy, of Beacon Falls, and Sandra Marchant, of Prospect, won three bronze medals at the Canadian/American Cup in Markham, Canada, May 31. Marchant also won a bronze medal in the veteran elite division for women’s epee, an event where fencers can hit anywhere on the body. Marchant competed with 32 fencers in the international competition. Marchant, Woundy and Cheshire resident Cara Wunderlich (not pictured) represented the Prospect Fencing Club, which is run by Prospect Parks and Recreation. Wunderlich won a bronze in the women’s foil in the over-60 age group. The Prospect Fencing Club won five total medals. –CONTRIBUTED
Kayla Rotatori of Naugatuck earned an Academic Excellence Award from Eastern Connecticut State University. The award honors students for maintaining a 3.8 GPA for both semesters. Rotatori, a freshman, is majoring in physical and elementary education and has been chosen as an advisor to faculty at Eastern for student curriculum.
