Cross Street Intermediate School students Karissa Moore and Samantha Valentine (holding proclamations) were honored April 28 as the school’s winners of the first Women’s History Month Essay Contest. Emilio Moray, an employee of the Ed the Treeman, hangs a flag on a utility pole along Route 69 in Prospect May 16. The flags, which are hung annually prior to Memorial Day, were put on utility poles through the center of town along Route 69 and Route 68. Turner Construction, which is working on the new Prospect Elementary School, donated $250 towards flags and brackets to extend the flags to the school at 75 New Haven Road. –LUKE MARSHALL
Through the team work of Naugatuck Youth Services and the Naugatuck Ecumenical Food Bank Naugatuck teens are able to get volunteer hours for graduation. Several teens volunteered over April break to help the food bank with spring cleaning, including scrubbing milk crates, cleaning refrigerators, and washing and painting the walls. –CONTRIBUTED
A group of 19 Naugatuck High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets cleaned the east riverbank of the Naugatuck River and the Greenway Trail in Linden Park in Naugatuck April 23. Master Sgt. Gary Morrone, USAF (ret), and Lt. Col. Valerie Lofland, USAF (ret), led the cadets. This the sixth consecutive year and 11th time the NHS ROTC has completed conservation projects along the Naugatuck River. More than a dozen bags of light debris, two shopping carts, metal pipes and poles, and a truck tire were removed from the riverbank. The project was organized by Joe Savarese and Bob Gregorski of the Naugatuck River Watershed Association and sponsored by the borough of Naugatuck. Student Transportation of America in Naugatuck donated the bus transportation. The Naugatuck-Pomperaug Chapter Trout Unlimited helped subsidized the project.

Victoria Rosado, 7, of Naugatuck won for best costume at the East Coast Comic Con April 12 at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, N.Y. Her costume was a custom-made Wonder Woman black ops variant made by her parents. Rosado has been competing since 2013 at various comic conventions throughout the Northeast and has placed in the top three in all. –CONTRIBUTED
State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) met and spoke with students from her district who are members of CT TeenPact recently at the state Capitol. Zupkus discussed her role as a state legislator, the legislative process and current issues being discussed by the legislature. The students spent the day learning about and understanding their state government as they toured the Legislative Office Building and the state Capitol. –CONTRIBUTED
Naugatuck High School teacher Tim Reilly speaks with Suzana Amaral, an NHS senior and the current vice president of Naugatuck’s DECA chapter, of which Reilly is the advisor, May 11 at the Raymond K. Foley Award dinner at The Crystal Room.
