Joseph Crisco Jr. (D-17), center, received a 2014 Legislative Champion Award from the Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs Oct. 21 during the YMCA’s Leaders’ Dinner. The award was in recognition of Crisco’s strong advocacy for the Y, a news release stated. ‘The Y has a saying, ‘They’re for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,’ Crisco said in the release ‘You put those three things together and you’ve got the foundation for a great society and great personal success. The money was raised by taking a percentage of the gold traded in at the store by Naugatuck residents. Prospect Jewelers has donated over $7,000 to area food banks since the store opened eight years ago. The store has supported local food banks, Canfield said, because while some scrap gold for extra cash others there have been less fortunate people who have scrapped gold in order to keep food on their table. –CONTRIBUTED Thirty-eight Naugatuck High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets recently cleaned the east riverbank of the Naugatuck River and the greenway trail in Linden Park in Naugatuck led by Master Sgt. Gary Morrone (retired) and Lt. Col. Valerie Lofland (retired). This the fifth consecutive year and 10th time that the NHS ROTC has completed spring and fall conservation projects along the Naugatuck River. More than a dozen bags of light debris and various other items were removed. The project was organized by Joe Savarese and Bob Gregorski of the Naugatuck River Watershed Association and sponsored by the Borough of Naugatuck. Ron Tymula Manager of Student Transportation of America in Naugatuck donated the bus transportation. The Naugatuck-Pomperaug Chapter Trout Unlimited subsidized the project. The 79ers (9-2), the fourth-grade team (5-3-1), the Colonial Red Division champions sixth-grade team (7-1) and the Colonial Red Division champions seventh-grade team (7-2) played. After winning the semifinal game, 42-26, the Hawks advanced to the championship game against the Oxford Hawkeyes at Quaker Farms School in Oxford Nov. 16. The Hawks won the championship, 30-29, after trailing 21-0 at halftime. ‘To say I am proud of these boys would be an understatement.’ coach Chris Anderson said. ‘It is easy to say don’t quit when you are trailing 21-0, but it’s another to actually keep fighting and to believe you can win.
