MultimediaSlideshows Community snapshots By mycitizensnews - August 18, 2012 0 25 The YMCA Naugatuck All Star Travel Team won the gold medal for basketball at the 6th Annual YMCA Olympics Aug. 11 at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. The team beat the Wilson Elite team from Hartford (57-41) and the Albany Aircats (64-48) on the way to the gold medal game against Springfield Dunbar, which Naugatuck won 89-50. ‘Today we are not only Naugy all stars, we are Naugy champions,’ coach Matthew Witowski said. The team, made up of eighth- and ninth-graders, went 10-4 during the regular season. Their trophy will be displayed in the trophy locker at the Naugatuck YMCA on Church Street. Family members from as far away at Colorado, California, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Florida attended the yearly event, which has been held consecutively since 1887. The oldest attendee was 101-year-old Franklin Andrew, who has attend 100 reunions, missing one when he was a teenager. The Andrew family has long has its roots in New England which include landing in America just 10 years after the Mayflower and a family ancestor, Samuel Andrew being a founder of Yale University (then Yale College) in 1701. –MATT ANDREW The Exchange Club of Naugatuck was recently chosen as the best club in District IV by the Connecticut District Exchange. The club provides scholarships and works for the prevention of child abuse. The club meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at Jesse Camille’s Restaurant. -CONTRIBUTED
